Confidence in Christ: Knowing Who You Are

by | Jul 9, 2025 | Spiritual Growth & Identity

As a pastor and counsellor, I’ve walked beside people who were fully capable, deeply gifted, and uniquely called — yet constantly battling self-doubt. Maybe you’ve been there too. Maybe you’re there right now. If so, I want you to know this: true confidence isn’t something you manufacture — it’s something you discover when you realise who you are in Christ.

The World’s Confidence vs. Confidence in Christ

The world teaches us that confidence is built on appearance, success, or achievements. We are told to “believe in yourself,” “follow your heart,” or “fake it till you make it.” While those phrases may temporarily boost our mood, they rarely lead to lasting change.

Confidence in Christ, however, is different. It’s not based on who you are, but whose you are. In Romans 8:16, Paul writes, “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.” That truth alone changes everything.

Who Does God Say You Are?

When Moses doubted his ability to lead, God didn’t boost his ego. He simply said, “I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12)

When Gideon hid in fear, God called him “mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12)

When Peter denied Jesus, Christ still called him to build His church.

Throughout Scripture, God speaks not to who people think they are — but to who they are in Him.

And so I ask you today: Who has God called you to be? Do you believe Him?

Your Identity is Your Foundation

The key to confidence in Christ is rooted in identity. The enemy of your soul will try to label you — with shame, fear, insecurity, and comparison. But God calls you:

  • Chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
  • Loved (Romans 8:38-39)
  • Forgiven (Ephesians 1:7)
  • A New Creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
  • His Workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)

Meditate on these truths. Speak them out loud. Write them down. You are not what you’ve done. You are not what’s been done to you. You are who God says you are.

Practical Ways to Build Confidence in Christ

  1. Renew Your Mind Daily

    • Romans 12:2 says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
    • Replace negative self-talk with Scripture. Use sticky notes, apps, or journals.
  2. Talk to God About Your Insecurities

    • Don’t hide your doubts from Him. He already sees them. Bring them into the light.
  3. Surround Yourself with Faith Builders

    • Join a small group, prayer circle, or Christian mentorship group. Confidence grows in community.
  4. Step Out in Obedience

    • Confidence grows when we act on God’s calling. Start small. Speak. Write. Serve.
  5.  Set Healthy Boundaries

    • Say no to things that feed insecurity. Say yes to what strengthens your soul.

A Word About Comparison

One of the fastest ways to lose confidence is to compare yourself to others. Social media often magnifies this — showing us highlight reels that make us feel behind.

But Galatians 6:4 reminds us, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.”

Focus on your lane. Your assignment. Your process.

Even Biblical Heroes Struggled With Confidence

  • Jeremiah said, “I do not know how to speak; I am too young.” (Jeremiah 1:6)
  • Esther feared for her life but walked in purpose anyway.
  • Timothy was timid, but Paul reminded him that “God has not given us a spirit of fear.” (2 Timothy 1:7)

If you’re feeling unqualified, you’re in good company. God qualifies the called — He doesn’t always call the qualified.

When You Still Don’t Feel Confident

Let me be honest: some days, I still doubt myself. I still wonder if I’m enough. But that’s when I lean even harder into Christ.

Confidence in Christ doesn’t mean we never feel weak. It means we trust God even when we do. Paul said in 2 Corinthians 12:10, “For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Keep walking. Keep believing. Keep declaring who you are in Him.

Closing Encouragement

Friend, confidence in Christ is not a personality trait — it’s a spiritual truth. You were made for this moment. You are equipped by grace, strengthened by faith, and carried by love.

 As you go:

  • Speak truth over yourself every morning.
  • Unfollow voices that sow insecurity.
  • Stay connected to your church or small group.
  • Memorise at least one Scripture a week about identity.

And if you want deeper teaching on this topic, explore our resource library on knowing your worth or schedule a counselling session with a faith-based mentor.

You are deeply loved. Stand tall in who He created you to be.
